How crème brûlée helped me build a chatbot business


I was standing over a bowl of crème brûlée in the corner of a small cafe. My DSLR camera was auto focusing to adjust to the lighting. CLICK — CLICK. I look at the shot, not good enough. I lean back over the bowl once more… CLICK CLICK. I look back down, perfect. I take a seat and start looking through all the pictures. As I’m scrolling through the endless number of photos of crème brûlée, I stop and look around and it hits me like a ton of bricks, ‘dude what the hell are you doing?’

I have big goals, personal and professional. I want to live a BIG life, provide value, have awesome experiences, be of service and have fun doing it all. Entrepreneurship always called to me. I’ve created a few businesses throughout my twenties, most failed, some worked. I always loved tech. The allure of creating something of value while building a business around an industry that is so ubiquitous in our daily lives fascinates me.

So in that moment when I found myself in a cafe taking pictures of crème brûlée for a social media client of mine I awoke out of my trance. I realized I had been playing small, playing from defence instead of offence. I was enjoying what I was doing, but I knew there was more, there was another field I needed to play in. Social media agencies were popping up everywhere, the market was saturated, I didn’t want to be a business that just competes. I want to dominate!

I decided I was going to attend Grant Cardone’s 10X conference in Miami to refresh the batteries and see what came of it. He was giving away a handful of free tickets and to qualify, you had to post a short video on Facebook. I thought since I’m looking for a change of pace I had to do something different, in this case, be vulnerable. Screw it I thought - I’ll put out a video and try to get one of those tickets. What ended up transpiring changed the course I was on and paved the path for what I’m doing now.

A long-time friend of mine from middle school who I lost touch with over the years saw the video and reached out looking to catch up over a couple drinks.

Fast forward a year and a half later and we’re business partners in a chatbot agency that is working with businesses and brands like KIA, Realtors, TED speakers, Chiropractors, Coaches, E-commerce and more.

Some people don’t like Messenger chatbots, some people love them, but whether you hate em or love em the fact is that chatbots are becoming the go-to medium that businesses and brands are using in communicating with their customers. The numbers dictate that this isn’t just a trend. Chatbots are here to teach, build trust, and sell through automated and unique interactive experiences and I’m excited to be on the forefront of it.

I never did end up going to that conference… sometimes all it takes is a little self awareness, some vulnerability and a little crème brûlée to get the answers you are looking for.
